What Does Google Say About SEO and AI Search?
Google's own guide to AI features tells site owners to apply the same foundational SEO best practices they already use for Search. To show up as a link inside an AI Overview or AI Mode answer, a page has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google with a snippet. Google lists no extra technical requirements and no special optimization. (Google Search Central)
So the AI answer is built on top of search. A page that search ignores is a page the AI cannot cite.
Why Do Most Pages Never Show Up in AI Answers?
Because most pages never earn search traffic in the first place. Ahrefs found that 96.55% of the pages in its index get zero traffic from Google. (Ahrefs) AI tools read the same web, pick a few names, and cite their sources. If your pages sit in that 96.55%, you are not one of the names.
