Why this matters in 2026

Buyers no longer start with ten blue links. They ask an assistant for the answer. When a Pittsburgh resident asks for the best personal injury lawyer, HVAC company, or accounting firm, the assistant returns a short list of named businesses. If a business is not on that list, it is not ranked low. It does not exist for that buyer. There is no second page and no scrolling.

We measured exactly that. We asked a leading AI assistant 24 real buyer-intent questions across the 8 verticals where Pittsburgh buyers most often let an assistant choose, and recorded which of 38 prominent, established local businesses it actually named. Half of them, it never named at all.

Five findings that should change how Pittsburgh businesses think about search

1. Half of prominent Pittsburgh businesses are invisible to AI. 19 of 38 audited businesses scored zero. Not low. Zero. They were never named across any query in their own category. These are not obscure shops. They are established, well-known names in their fields.

2. Fame does not buy AI visibility. Primanti Bros. and Eat'n Park, two of the most recognized names in Pittsburgh, both scored zero when the assistant was asked for the best places to eat. Brand recognition built over decades does not transfer to the AI answer. Visibility there is an engineering outcome, not a reputation one.

3. It is winner-take-most, not winner-take-all spread evenly. In most verticals one or two names absorb nearly all the citations while the rest get nothing. Gillece Services scored 80 in home services while two competitors in the same set scored zero. The assistant does not return a balanced field. It returns a short, sticky list.

4. Entire categories are nearly dark. In roofing and waterproofing, 3 of 4 audited firms were invisible, including a major commercial roofer. In restaurants, the two strongest names managed a single mention each and the three icons scored zero. Some categories have almost no Pittsburgh representation in the AI answer at all.

5. Visibility tracks structure, not size. The largest dealer group in the region scored zero. Mid-size construction firms ranked in the top three. What separates the cited few is not market share or ad budget. It is structured, machine-readable authority that the assistant can parse and trust. That is buildable, and almost nobody in this market has built it.

The Full Ranking

All 38 businesses, ranked worst to best, so the invisibility is visible. Score is a 0 to 100 composite of citation presence, rank position when cited, and whether the citation was linked, across the 3 buyer-intent queries in each vertical. Same rubric as the 2026 Enterprise AI Visibility Index, for direct comparability.

Methodology

Limitations and open dataset

This is a single-engine, point-in-time snapshot. AI answers vary by phrasing, session, and date, which is why the index is re-run on a fixed cadence to track movement rather than treated as a fixed verdict. The universe is prominent businesses, not a census, and is published in full so any business can verify its own result and any researcher can reproduce the method. The v1 universe is pending a final name and domain verification pass. The complete dataset is released under CC BY 4.0 for independent verification and reuse with attribution.
